Rail Technical Manager

About the opportunity
Reporting to the General Manager Technical Services, the Rail Technical Manager will oversee the performance and delivery of a major engineering and Design Advisory consultancy, ensuring technical outputs are integrated, assured and aligned with the Authority’s objectives. Working in a complex Early Contractor Involvement environment, you will collaborate with technical advisers, delivery partners and internal teams to resolve engineering challenges and support informed, defensible decisions ensuring the program delivers safe, sustainable, integrated and future-ready rail infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage technical contracts by overseeing the performance of the Engineering and Design Advisory consultancy, ensuring contractual obligations, milestones, quality requirements and program objectives are met.
  • Lead design and engineering assurance across track, stations, tunnels, power supply, signalling, digital train control, rolling stock and civil infrastructure.
  • Drive systems integration to ensure technical packages work together and align with safety, operational, regulatory and whole-of-program requirements.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs across technical, planning, commercial, procurement, operations, environmental and approvals workstreams.
  • Engage key stakeholders, including regulators, government agencies, delivery partners, advisers and early contractors.
  • Represent the Authority in technical forums, negotiations, assurance activities, audits and issue-resolution processes.
  • Provide strategic leadership to consultants and engineering teams, setting clear expectations and promoting accountability, responsiveness and collaboration.

About you
You are a senior rail engineering leader with extensive experience delivering complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure programs. You combine strong technical expertise with commercial awareness, sound judgement and the ability to influence stakeholders at executive, technical and government levels.
You will bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, such as civil, systems or a related discipline.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in rail infrastructure, including major project development and delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating engineering inputs across major rail systems, including track, stations, tunnels, rolling stock and digital train control.
  • Strong knowledge of systems engineering, systems integration, safety assurance and technical risk management.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing major technical advisory contracts.
  • Strong project management capability, including oversight of schedules, budgets, resources, risks and milestones.
  • A record of building trusted relationships with regulators, government agencies, consultants, contractors and delivery partners.
